According to UN Reports the world will receive 2.5 billion more people in the next 30 years. Due to rapid urbanization a majority of these people will be urban dwellers who will have to cope with the repid changing weather patterns. These trends combined with rural to urban migration of existing population and the fact that 1/3 of the world's urban population lives in slums emphasizes the urgant need for high quality urban design and planning along with securing its implementation.

The Urban Thinkers Campus is a special initiative of the World Urban Campaign and UN-Habitat, the UN agency focused on urbanization, to gather ideas from people around the world who are passionate about the future of cities. It is an initiative meant to emulate ad build consensus between partners engaged in addressing urbanization challenges and proposing solutions for urban futures. Twenty-nine Urban Thinker Campuses are planned in over a dozen countries on five continents, and the New York City edition is one of two in the U.S.
